Shortly before 12:30 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 20, police were dispatched to the home on the 5600 block of 30th Avenue after reports of a burglary. When officers arrived on the scene they saw a car attempting to leave the residence and immediately stopped the vehicle, according to the Prince George’s County Police Department.

The vehicle was found to be transporting a gravely wounded resident of the home, later identified as Giovanni Hayles, 23. Hayles was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Officers were then told that the burglar was still inside of the home, also suffering from gunshot wounds. The burglar was pronounced dead on the scene.
